How the spam score works

Two Numbers, One Verdict

A spam filter adds points for every rule a message trips and marks it as spam once the total reaches a threshold. The checker composes your email the way it would be sent, runs it through that kind of filter and shows the total, the threshold and each rule with its points. Lower is better.

The second number is a score out of 100, higher is better. It starts at 100 and loses points for each failed or warning check on the subject, body, links, HTML and sender. The spam filter result is folded in: at or over the threshold it costs 45 points, so the email cannot grade better than Fair; under the threshold it costs up to 20, more the closer it came.

Six Ways To Lower A Spam Score

  1. 01Read The Rules It TriggeredThe report lists every spam filter rule your email hit and how many points each one added. Fix the biggest first: one rule often carries most of the score.
  2. 02Cut The ShoutingCapital-letter subjects, rows of exclamation marks and money symbols each add points on their own. Write the subject the way you would to a colleague.
  3. 03Link Less, And Link PlainlyUse one or two links to your own domain. Link shorteners and link text that shows a different address from the one it opens are scored as phishing signals.
  4. 04Keep HTML SimpleA message that is mostly one big image, or heavy with layout tables and styling, scores worse than a short text email. Cold email rarely needs more than paragraphs.
  5. 05Say What You Offer, Specifically“100% free”, “risk-free” and “act now” are the phrases filters were trained on. A specific sentence about what you do is both lower scoring and more convincing.
  6. 06Check Again After Every EditScores move with small changes. Run the final version, merge fields and all, not the draft you started from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Email Spam Score Checker: what a spam score is, how to read yours and how to lower it.

An email spam score is the number of points a spam filter gives a message for the rules it matches, such as a shouting subject, a link shortener or HTML with no text part. When the total reaches the filter's threshold, the message is treated as spam. The checker shows your total, the threshold and every rule that added points.
